The clean-up from Storm Boelo is under way across Renfrewshire this morning. But there’s no proper break in the weather yet, because the Met Office has issued two new wind warnings that cover the area from this evening.
What the storm left behind
The amber wind warning ended at 9pm on Sunday after a wild weekend of strong winds and heavy rain. Fallen trees and surface flooding were reported across Renfrewshire on Sunday, including:
• a fallen tree blocking Leitchland Road near the Mackies Mill Road junction, on the route between Elderslie and Foxbar
• flooding on the road beside Lidl and the petrol station in Ferguslie, Paisley
• a fallen tree on Stirling Drive in Linwood
Other trees came down elsewhere in the area. The storm also damaged the overhead power lines on the railway at Bishopton, one of a string of problems Network Rail engineers worked through on Sunday and overnight.
Saturday’s Paisley Halloween Festival events were called off because of the forecast. Grandstand ticket holders are being refunded and contacted by email.
Travel this morning
ScotRail says the vast majority of its services are running as normal today. The routes still closed are in the Highlands and Argyll, not Renfrewshire. Bus operators suspended some services across the west on Sunday, so check with your operator before you set off.
Power companies spent the weekend reconnecting homes. On Sunday evening, around 4,500 homes across central and southern Scotland were still without power. If your power is off, call 105 for free.
Two more warnings for Renfrewshire
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for wind covering Renfrewshire from 6pm tonight (Monday) until 3am on Tuesday. Strong south to south-westerly winds could cause some delays on the roads, rail, air and ferry networks, with high-sided vehicles hit hardest on exposed roads and bridges.
A second yellow wind warning then runs from 3am until 9pm on Tuesday 27 October and covers Renfrewshire, Glasgow and the rest of Strathclyde. It warns of damaging gusts, longer journey times and cancellations, possible road and bridge closures, possible power cuts, and a slight chance of roof tiles being blown off and trees being damaged.
What you can do
• Tie down or bring in anything loose before tonight, such as bins, garden furniture, trampolines and anything left from the weekend.
• Check your journey before travelling on Tuesday, especially if you use the M8, the Erskine Bridge or the airport.
• Report fallen trees or flooding on council roads to Renfrewshire Council on 0300 300 0300, and call 999 if anyone is in danger.
We’ll share any further updates affecting Paisley and Renfrewshire as we get them.
