A £136,000 project will get underway later this month to carry out essential electrical work at Bishopton Community Centre.

Renfrewshire Council is funding a rewiring of the popular community building, with contractors beginning work on September 29.

The project means that the centre, which is self-managed day-to-day by a committee with support from Renfrewshire Leisure, will be temporarily closed.

The centre will reopen following the completion of works and redecoration this winter.

Mark Tokeley, Head of Leisure and Community Services at Renfrewshire Leisure, said: “This is an important investment in the future of Bishopton Community Centre, which plays a key role in the community. We are grateful to Renfrewshire Council for funding the works.

“We appreciate that the rewiring will cause an inconvenience for users of the centre – especially coming as the easing of Covid-19 restrictions mean that more of its regular activities can take place – and apologise for any disruption caused. We are keen, however, that this work takes place at the earliest opportunity.”

Renfrewshire Leisure staff are available to help centre users with alternative accommodation options for the duration of the closure. Details about other buildings in the charity’s estate can be found at www.renfrewshireleisure.com.

Lynne Hutchinson, Chair of Bishopton Community Centre Association, which comprises volunteers who represent the community and clubs which use the centre, said: “Bishopton Community Centre plays an important part in local life. Once this work is complete, we look forward to it being able to play a full and active role in the community again, particularly as people look to enjoy more activities as the recovery from Covid-19 continues. We know that our many groups and clubs are looking forward to getting back.”

To allow contractors to work, part of the community centre car park will be fenced off for use as a site compound during the project. The space will be freed up again upon completion.
