Chair Kathy O’Donnell explained: “There’s a growing interest in genealogy because it’s fascinating to find out who you might be related to.  Discovering your distant relative took part in a key event can make periods of history come alive and become personal for you.  Many American celebrities have researched their family tree and found a Mayflower connection.  People can ask George English about the best way to start a family history.”

Mayflower

Said guest speaker, George English: “2020 was the 400th Anniversary of Mayflower, the voyage that changed the world.  My own ancestor, Richard Warren, was a passenger on the Mayflower in 1620.  My presentation covers the events during the Reformation which led to the Pilgrims leaving for the New World; the voyage itself and the passengers; and the impact the Mayflower has had on Western civilisation since, including the Act of Union.  I look forward to an enjoyable discussion and helping anyone to explore what made this sail so special.”
