For senior citizens who may have just retired, this can be an incredibly exciting time of your life as you bid farewell to the gruelling life of full-time work. However, it can also take some time to adjust to this change in lifestyle. Many senior citizens find it difficult to fill their now empty days, and find a sense of purpose in their activities. Different things will work for different people, but the most important thing is to keep yourself busy and to keep your mind active. Filling your days with activities that enrich your life is a good place to start. Have a look at our list of the top 10 things for you as a senior resident of Paisley to do!

  • Play online bingo

While there are still community centres that run their own  bingo evenings, there is now a new way to enjoy this casual and fun game. You can now play online bingo if you have a computer. This means that you can play whenever you wish! For those who do not feel very confident using the computer, I can assure you that playing bingo online is incredibly easy and does not require much technical know-how. There is also a chat function that allows you to write messages to other people who are playing. This is a lot of fun and can help you make some new friends too.

  • Join a book club

Reading is one of the best ways to spend your time. But sometimes it can be a little bit lonely if you do not have someone with whom to share your opinions. Joining a book club is a great solution to this, and also a wonderful social activity.

  • Go walking with friends

Exercise is so important, and being mobile as you become older can really help you feel young at heart! While you may not be able to run a marathon, going for daily or weekly walks with your friends is a great way to keep active, spend time with your friends, and appreciate the beauty and nature outdoors.

  • Use your time to volunteer

If you want to bring a sense of meaning and purpose to your life now that you are no longer working, volunteering is a fantastic way to do just that! Find a local charity or organisation whose cause is near and dear to your heart. Phone them and ask how you can be of assistance.

  • Take advantage of local classes

You’re never too old to try something new! Why not take advantage of some local classes? The Paisley Art Centre has some great classes on offer.

  • Start your own business

While you technically are retired, you may want a little side business to keep you busy. If you are good at making any food or craft products, you could start a little business and sell your goods at the Paisley farmers’ market.

  • Take up knitting or crocheting

Knitting or crocheting is a perfect activity for the colder months. It is something you can do in front of the telly, or while in bed even! And at the end, you get something practical out of all your work!

  • Play card games or board games socially

Bridge, Scrabble, Boggle, take your pick! Playing card or board games socially is a really fun way to spend time with your friends and family, and keep that competitive edge alive!

  • Gardening

Gardening can be an incredibly relaxing hobby. If you are not already an avid gardener, start small with some potted herbs.

  • Bird-watching

If you enjoy nature and wildlife, taking up bird-watching can be an incredibly interesting and rewarding hobby. Invest in a good pair of binoculars and a notebook to write down all your sightings!
