Matthew Zajac’s acclaimed one-man play The Tailor of Inverness is coming to Paisley next month, but theatregoers should note a change of venue.

Dogstar Theatre’s production was due to be staged at Paisley Town Hall on Tuesday, 3 November. OneRen, which runs both venues, has confirmed the performance has been moved to Paisley Arts Centre on New Street. Curtain up is still 7.30pm.

Written and performed by Zajac, the play is inspired by the life of his father, who grew up on a farm in Galicia, then part of eastern Poland and now western Ukraine. It follows his journey through Europe, the Middle East and the Soviet Union during the Second World War before he settled in the Scottish Highlands, where he became a tailor in Inverness, made clothes for thousands of people and became a familiar part of the community.

The play explores identity, family history, displacement and the impact of war, as well as Zajac’s relationship with his father and the story he left behind. It tells the life of one man among millions whose destinies were shaped by forces far beyond their control.

The Tailor of Inverness premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2008, where it won a Scotsman Fringe First and The Stage Award for Best Solo Performer. Zajac went on to win Best Actor at the 2009 Critics’ Awards for Theatre in Scotland.

More than 40,000 people have since seen the show, which has toured to New York, Adelaide, Kyiv, Malmö and Berlin as well as smaller towns and village halls across Ireland, Sweden, Wales and Ukraine.

Directed by Ben Harrison, the production weaves together storytelling, poetry, music and projection, with live fiddle music by Scottish traditional musicians Jonny Hardie and Gavin Marwick and design by Ali Maclaurin.

The current Scottish tour coincides with a new edition of Zajac’s book The Tailor of Inverness, published by Luath Press, which includes a new epilogue reflecting on recent events and his continuing involvement in Ukraine.

Dogstar Theatre is based in the Highlands and has performed in 14 countries, touring both major theatres and small community venues.

The show is suitable for ages 12 and over and runs for 80 minutes with no interval. Tickets are £19.50 and £16.50, including a £1 venue levy and £1.50 service charge.
