A tournament that was part of the furniture of Scottish football in the 1980s and early 1990s is back this weekend, with Braehead Arena in Renfrew hosting a legends edition of the small-sided competition. All 12 William Hill Premiership clubs have signed up.

The SPFL Tennent’s Sixes takes place on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October, and every match will be shown live on Premier Sports.

Familiar Faces in This Season’s Colours

Players who made their name in the recent past will pull on the official club kits of the current campaign. The original Tennent’s Sixes ran from 1984 to 1993, and Partick Thistle hold the distinction of being the last side to lift the cult trophy.

The SPFL and Braehead Arena are staging the event jointly, and have presented the revival as a family occasion that mixes nostalgia with a modern twist.

How the Weekend Works

Saturday begins with the group stages: three regionalised groups of four teams. The winner and runner-up of each group go through to the knockout rounds, joined by the two best third-placed sides.

No game will be left drawn. Every match produces a winner, and a side that wins a penalty shootout after a draw picks up a bonus point. The sin bin also makes a return.

Session Times and Venue

Four sessions are scheduled across the two days. Anyone planning to go should check with the venue for the latest timings:

  • Day one, afternoon: 1pm to 3.30pm

  • Day one, evening: 4.30pm to 7pm

  • Day two, afternoon: 1pm to 3.30pm

  • Day two, finals session: from 4.30pm, finishing around 8pm on the Sunday

Braehead Arena is on Kings Inch Road, Renfrew, G51 4BP. Hospitality tickets are listed for each individual session, while general ticketing is handled by the event organisers.

What the Organisers Say

SPFL Group Chief Executive Neil Doncaster said: “The Tennent’s Sixes has a special place in the hearts and minds of a generation of football fans and we are absolutely thrilled to get the band back together again with the official endorsement of the SPFL.

“There are many unofficial Masters events but only one SPFL Tennent’s Sixes: the original and best and one we are proud to put our name to, with the support and involvement of all 12 William Hill Premiership clubs.”

Russell Smith, Braehead Arena Chief Executive, said: “When we first floated the idea, the excitement and enthusiasm from everyone showed that it is a format that will absolutely resonate in 2026… We look forward to creating memories for new generations of football fans.”
