Story lovers will be hooked on how storytelling has merged words with pictures through the ages.

Paisley- born storyteller, Alison Clark will’ use visual tools created centuries ago at her talk on Thursday 1 June to Paisley & District u3a.

Members of this self-help learning organisation will hear more when they meet at 2pm in the Salvation Army Hall, Mill Street, Paisley, PA1 1ND.  Doors open at 1.30pm for refreshments.

Alison Clark is sharing how story scrolls, used worldwide, created a picture backdrop for telling tales or singing songs.  By the 19th century, handmade scenes were put on spools inside a box.  Performers could easily roll or ‘crank; the paper into moving panoramas.

u3a chair, Kathy O’Donnell said: “This promises to be a fascinating journey into the visual history of storytelling and the art of making creative props.  Crankie theatres are new to many of us but were a traditional way to illustrate stories.  We expect Alison, as an imaginative writer, artist and puppet maker, will crank up our audience’s enjoyment.”

Playwright Alison Clark said: “I hope you’ll find my hand-made puppets and crankie, with its own fantastic tale, just ‘fandabidozy.’  It’sa chance to learn from a fellow u3a-er about this centuries-old way of telling tales before television.”
