A scattered pile of white bingo cards with a variety of numbers printed on them. The word "BINGO" appears at the top of each card.

When you think about casino games it’ll often be the same few classics that come up, from Roulette to Slots. But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t newer game designs out there to try. Fusion games have seen a rise over the last few years, bringing together elements of old favourites to create a fresh twist.

Slingo is a particularly notable fusion game, having drawn in a large playerbase with its combination of Slots with Bingo. An increasing number of players now dip into games of Slingo online, so let’s take a look at just what the game is and how it demonstrates the art of the fusion game.

How Slingo works

Slingo actually isn’t as new as you might expect, with its invention credited to Sal Falciglia in 1994. This predates the creation and popularisation of online casinos, with Falciglia envisioning the game as having a potential spot on a TV gameshow.

But the simple concept of blending elements of two already popular games ultimately proved to be a much bigger hit. As Slingo draws on both Slots and Bingo it is a game that players of either of those classics can generally understand, broadening its reach through two existing playerbases.

The core gameplay of Slingo is very much based on the pattern of Bingo, with players aiming to match numbers on a 5×5 grid. But the twist comes in how players receive their numbers, as the Bingo caller is replaced by a set of Slot reels.

On the screen the reels line up with the five columns of the Slingo grid, allowing players to mark off numbers if the corresponding reel stops on them. This allows for generally faster gameplay than a typical Bingo game, as the five reels all spin at the same time and players can potentially mark off five numbers at once.

Another element borrowed from Slots is the concept of wilds. These special symbols add an extra twist to the Bingo gameplay, with Jokers allowing players to mark off any number in the matching column or Devils blocking a reel for that spin.

The art of the fusion game

Slingo is the perfect example of a fusion game done right, blending together elements of very different parent games to create something that’s both familiar and fresh.

Many of the classic games have been around for decades going on centuries, so it’s understandable that their gameplay might start to get old for players. That’s where fusion games find their niche, by switching up classic games rather than creating something entirely from scratch.

Fusion games effectively have a built-in audience, as they have the immediate potential to appeal to players of both parent games through a degree of existing familiarity. This makes it far easier for fusion games to grow their playerbase, while also potentially paving the way for players to try out the parent game they aren’t already familiar with.

There are few fusion games that stand out as much as Slingo, which has proven itself almost as popular as traditional Bingo or Slots. As the online casino landscape continues to evolve we could see even more fusion games pop up, drawing on the path laid out by Slingo.
