Residents of Marchfield Avenue in Paisley could soon have their street back, with a residents-only parking scheme set to go before councillors next week.
The street, close to Glasgow Airport and the Westpoint Business Park roundabout, has long been used as an unofficial free car park. Since April 2022 the council has received 37 complaints and queries from councillors and the public about it.
Neighbours have described seeing drivers pull suitcases out of their cars and then leave them for long periods. There have also been concerns about airport drop-offs and pick-ups, commuter parking, and cars from the nearby business estate spilling into laybys and onto junction corners and roundabout approaches, making it harder to see and get about safely.
What's proposed
The traffic order covers Marchfield Avenue and New Harbour Way. When it went out to consultation it drew 14 objections and ten enquiries.
Council officers are recommending some changes in response. These include tweaks to parking outside homes, bringing the privately maintained cul-de-sac at numbers 50 to 56 into the scheme, dropping a planned bay outside number 61 because a driveway is on the way, and taking out the unrestricted spaces that were originally included.
Other objectors raised questions about how many permits households would get, visitors, how the scheme would be run and whether charges might follow. The council says it has no plans to charge for permits at present, that extra visitor permits can be requested, and that anyone needing care or mobility support will be looked at individually.
Councillors on the Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board will consider the objections and amendments on Wednesday 4 November before deciding whether to authorise the order.
