Local people in Renfrewshire are being encouraged to ensure they are aware of the support available for anyone who becomes homeless, or is at risk of becoming homeless, during the winter period.

The festive period can see a rise in people presenting as homeless so, as part of Renfrewshire Council’s #RenReady campaign, the Council is aiming to highlight the support available.

Anyone who finds themselves without a place to stay, or it is not safe for them to return to their accommodation, can be provided with temporary housing and should call 0141 618 7200 during office hours or 0800 121 4466 at all other times.

A Housing Options Adviser will be able to meet with the person to discuss their housing options and help decide the best response to their current situation.

If this is to make a homeless application, the adviser will support them through the process, including assessing their current support needs, supporting them into accommodation and providing ongoing assistance to prevent them from becoming homeless again in the future.

The Council also provides support to prevent someone from becoming homeless if they are having difficulty paying their rent or mortgage and are at risk of losing their home through eviction or repossession.

Its Prevention Team offers advice on housing options, benefit entitlement, understanding the court process for eviction/repossession, specialist legal or debt advice, and accessing support services.

Councillor Marie McGurk, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Communities, Housing and Planning Policy Board, said: “We’re working hard to prevent homelessness occurring within Renfrewshire, but also recognise that we must ensure we have extensive support available if it does happen to someone living in the area.

“Our team do fantastic work to provide support to those in need and I would encourage everyone to ensure they are aware of the process, even if this is so you can help someone else who may be at risk.

“The festive period can often see a rise in homelessness which is particularly concerning with the weather at this time of year so please get in touch if you, or someone you know, is facing the prospect of becoming homeless – we’re always available to help.”
