Renfrew FC’s first ever Scottish Cup run is still going, after one of the stand-out results of the second round.
On Saturday, Renfrew beat League Two side Stirling Albion 2-1 at New Western Park in what was the club’s first ever competitive match against SPFL opposition. Plenty of games around the country fell victim to Storm Boelo, but the tie on Inchinnan Road went ahead in front of 293 fans.
How Renfrew did it
Aedan Gilfedder gave Renfrew the lead just before half-time, on 43 minutes. Sean Fyfe made it 2-0 ten minutes after the break. Billy Hutchinson pulled one back for Stirling with 11 minutes left, but Renfrew held on through stoppage time to complete the upset.
Home draw in round three
Renfrew’s reward, from Sunday’s draw, is a home tie against either Cumbernauld Colts or Highland League side Banks O’Dee. Their second-round match was abandoned in the second half because of the weather and still has to be completed.
Johnstone Burgh still to play
Johnstone Burgh haven’t played their second-round tie yet. Their home match against Highland League high-flyers Formartine United was postponed because of the weather and has been rearranged for Saturday 31 October at Keanie Park, kick-off 3pm.
The winners already know what’s waiting for them: an away trip to Dumbarton in the third round.
Third-round ties will be played over the weekend of Saturday 28 November. This is the round where clubs from the Championship and League One join the competition, so the prizes keep getting bigger for Renfrewshire’s non-league sides.
