Renfrew FC’s Walking Football group marked its fifth birthday with a visit from Provost Lorraine Cameron at New Western Park on Wednesday 7 October.
What began as a small gathering has grown to more than 60 registered members, with between 30 and 40 players turning out for the weekly sessions.
During her visit, Provost Cameron chatted with members about what the group means to them. They spoke about getting out in the fresh air, keeping fit as they get older and building friendships, with a cuppa and a biscuit after the football a firm fixture.
Three original members, Brian, Ally and Graham, received small commemorative awards from the Provost, who was then presented with a pennant and a Renfrew FC polo shirt as a thank-you. Afterwards, members enjoyed their usual biscuits alongside cakes baked by the mum of Callum, the group’s youngest member.
The group also thanked Alan Kelly, Murray Morton, Hedley McNish and Tom Johnston, who organise the weekly sessions and several nights out through the year. Members say the four have created a welcoming, safe space that everyone appreciates.
