Repairs to Renfrew Cenotaph will be carried out before this year’s Remembrance Sunday, according to local councillor Jamie McGuire – though work on the memorial’s roof will have to wait until after the service.
There have previously been concerns about weeds and lighting at the site, which is the focus of the town’s act of remembrance each November.
Councillor McGuire said on social media that Renfrewshire Council will now carry out maintenance work there ahead of Remembrance Sunday, which falls on 8 November this year. However, he said an “agreement was unable to be reached for the roofing repairs to be completed before the service, with the council maintaining that these will have to take place afterwards”.
“The Renfrew Cenotaph is a place of remembrance and respect,” he said. “Those who gave everything deserve nothing less than for us to make sure it is properly maintained and treated with the dignity it deserves.”
He added: “We will keep pushing until the job is finished.”
