Renfrewshire’s Remembrance events are moving online for 2020, allowing communities across Renfrewshire to pay their respects from home.

The move online is in response to the current COVID-19 pandemic, to ensure remembrance reflection can still take place in adherence with physical distancing rules and national guidance.

Instead of the traditional parades and services, Renfrewshire Council will release a specially commissioned video focusing on the importance of Remembrance to communities across Renfrewshire. The video will premiere on the council’s social media channels to tie in with the national two-minute silence on Sunday 8 November and will be available to watch on the council website from Monday 9 November.

In addition to the video, a podcast will be produced highlighting the work of veteran’s care charity Erskine and released on Armistice Day, Wednesday 11 November.

Renfrewshire’s Provost Lorraine Cameron said: “Every year at this time we stop to remember those we have lost, and I would encourage everyone to watch our Remembrance video, whether live on our social media channels or at a time that is convenient to you.

“I understand many of you will still wish to visit a cenotaph or war memorial for personal reflection, and I would urge you to consider this carefully and ensure you follow national guidelines around physical distancing and households mixing when you visit. Please think about timing your visit to avoid the traditional service times, and if it looks too busy consider coming back at a quieter time.

“We cannot express enough gratitude to our Armed Forces and it’s extremely important that we continue to honour them on Remembrance Sunday, and all year round as well.”
