Gritting teams in Renfrewshire are ready to deal with the forthcoming cold snap as preparations for winter continue.

Nine gritting machines will cover more than 800km of roads across Renfrewshire, with more than 4000 tonnes of grit ready to keep Renfrewshire moving throughout the winter period.

Residents will once again be able to track Renfrewshire’s gritters on the council website, including local favourites such as Ploughlo Grittini, Tony Gritzpatrick and Fridge of Weir, as they work day and night when required to keep the roads network safe from snow and ice.

Gritting teams form one part of the area’s #RenReady Ready for Winter campaign which aims to make residents and workers in Renfrewshire aware of how to prepare for winter weather conditions, while also highlighting the work of frontline council staff who keep services operating whatever the weather.

#RenReady aims to provide information on areas such as how to avoid winter illness, including how to access flu and Covid booster vaccinations, and the support that the council provides to tenants and residents to keep warm throughout any cold weather.

Councillor Cathy McEwan, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board, went along to the Council’s Underwood Road depot to see the preparations first-hand.

Councillor McEwan said: “When the winter weather arrives, it’s a really challenging time for our teams as they try to keep Renfrewshire moving during snow and ice, but it’s great to see that we are prepared and ready to get going when the temperatures begin to drop.

“We’ve got more than 4,000 tonnes of grit available for our teams to use and we monitor the weather 24/7 to ensure that we can get out ahead of the cold snap as soon as possible.

“We’ll be working hard to keep the streets safe from snow and ice, but there are also plenty of ways you can prepare in advance for winter weather so please visit our website for some tips and ideas to stay a step of the weather this winter.” For more information, visit www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/RenReady
