More than a thousand unsafe toys have been taken off shelves across Renfrewshire following intervention by council Trading Standards officers.
The removal focuses on popular squishy toys – soft sensory items made from foam or gel, often shaped as food or animals. Among those seized were squeezy dumpling toys sold in small plastic steamers and 'salted butter' bar designs.
Officials are urging families to check these products carefully before purchase. Some counterfeit versions closely mimic well-known brands, making it hard to spot fakes. Many lack crucial safety information such as age recommendations, UK importer details or required UKCA and CE markings.
There are serious concerns about chemical levels in certain toys, which can irritate skin, eyes and breathing. Parents should avoid any with strong chemical or petrol-like smells.
A dangerous TikTok trend is also prompting warnings. Children are heating these toys in microwaves, causing them to burst and inflict serious burns.
Councillor Marie McGurk emphasised that children's safety remains the priority. She encouraged parents to spend extra time checking purchases and discussing social media dangers with their children.
