Your New Home for Books, Learning and Community: Paisley Central Library

Whether you're a bookworm, a lifelong learner, a curious youngster, or someone who just fancies a quiet place to sit and read — Paisley Central Library has something for you.

Nestled right in the heart of Paisley's High Street, the library reopened its doors in November 2023 following a magnificent £7 million transformation. What was once a vacant retail unit is now one of the most exciting spaces in the town — and it's completely free to use.

A Space for Everyone

Spread across four bright, welcoming floors, the library has been designed with every visitor in mind.

Head to the ground floor and you'll find a fantastic children's library complete with a one-of-a-kind play structure featuring designs by celebrated Scottish artist Claire Barclay. It's a magical space for little ones to discover the joy of stories.

As you head upstairs, you'll find dedicated areas for adult fiction and non-fiction, a free digital suite with public IT access, community rooms with digital screens, and a peaceful top floor perfect for studying, reading, or just taking a moment to yourself. There are even thoughtfully designed spaces to support people living with dementia.

Dig into Paisley's Past

History buffs will love the Heritage Centre, which is home to an extraordinary collection of local archives. Want to trace your family tree? The Heritage Centre offers free Family History surgeries and gives members access to resources like Ancestry and Scotland's People. The collections go back centuries — from Paisley newspapers dating to 1824 and weavers' records to census data and poll tax rolls. It's a treasure trove for anyone with Renfrewshire roots.

Books Without Borders

Can't make it in person? No problem. Library members can access ebooks, e-audiobooks, and a wide range of digital resources online, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Your library card opens doors long after the building closes.

Come and See for Yourself

Paisley Central Library is more than just a place to borrow books — it's a community hub, a learning space, and a little slice of Paisley's proud history all under one roof. Pop in, have a look around, and see what it can do for you.

You'll find us on Paisley High Street. We'd love to see you!
