Local people invited to help shape the future of Johnstone’s Civic Squares

Renfrewshire Council is inviting residents, businesses and community groups to have their say on proposals to revitalise Johnstone’s two historic civic squares – Houstoun Square and Ludovic Square – and the connecting Houston Court precinct.

Renfrewshire Council is inviting residents, businesses and community groups to have their say on proposals to revitalise Johnstone’s two historic civic squares – Houstoun Square and Ludovic Square – and the connecting Houston Court precinct.

The proposals aim to celebrate the town’s rich heritage while creating more welcoming, inclusive and flexible public spaces for people of all ages to enjoy.

Key features include enhanced planting, improved seating and lighting, better connections between the squares and the Town Hall, and new opportunities for events, play and community activity.

The designs also explore the potential to open up views and routes between the squares by removing a vacant building at Houston Court, transforming the area into a green link with new landscaping, play areas and sustainable drainage features.

Local people are encouraged to attend an in-person consultation event on Thursday 29 May at 32 Houston Court, Johnstone from 2pm to 7pm, where council officers will be on hand to discuss the proposals.

Exhibition boards showcasing the plans will also be available to view online at www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/johnstone-squares, giving everyone the chance to view the proposals and share their feedback.

Councillor Andy Steel, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Economy and Regeneration Policy Board, said: “Johnstone’s civic squares are at the heart of the town and hold great historical and cultural value. These proposals aim to breathe new life into these spaces, making them greener, more accessible and better suited to the needs of the community today.

“We want to hear from as many people as possible to help shape the final designs. Whether you live, work or visit Johnstone, your views are important – so please come along to the event or share your thoughts online.”

The consultation closes on 22 June 2025, and all feedback will help inform the next stage of design development, with initial phases of delivery expected to begin in 2026.
