Heather Reid is a prominent Scottish physicist and meteorologist, widely known by the affectionate nickname "Heather the Weather".

Career and Achievements

Heather Reid was born in Paisley and earned degrees in physics and satellite image processing from the University of Edinburgh. She began her career at the UK Met Office in satellite research before transitioning to a role as a weather presenter for BBC Scotland. From 1994 to 2009, she served as BBC Scotland's senior weather forecaster on Reporting Scotland. Reid was awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2007 for her contributions to physics.

Public Engagement and Science Promotion

Beyond her television career, Reid has been dedicated to promoting science to young people and the public. She has worked as a science education consultant and has been involved with the Glasgow Science Centre, developing educational weather shows and workshops. She has also served on various STEM education advisory committees and boards, including the Board of NatureScot and as Convener of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park Authority Board. A 2010 single by the band Randan Discothèque, titled "Heather the Weather," was released as a homage to her. Reid also holds a position as a Trustee and Chair of the Scotland Committee to The National Lottery Heritage Fund board.
