In the world of e-commerce, a well taken and clear image is vital. A picture is worth a thousand words. Customers only spend a few seconds looking at an image before deciding whether to engage, read the product description and buy. If those goods are blurred or look cheap and shoddy due to a poor background, the customer will go elsewhere.

Website imagery is as important as branding, so images must stand out and be clear and uncluttered. Taking photographs is an art as well as a science, and the images you display must look professional in order to strengthen your brand. Whether you decide to hire a professional photographer or take your own pictures, the images you upload become your shop window. Use a neutral background, preferably white, and consider using a light box to enhance the displayed item.

A single image is static: the viewer cannot touch, feel or see the product from all angles, so include additional views which can give the customer a better perspective. Detail is important to the customer, so add zoomable images which can be clicked on or hovered over to bring the goods right up close on screen. By starting off with a ‘hero image’ taken from either the front, side or above depending on the product, the shopper is drawn to view it from other angles as well. The final image to open should be an in-context picture, to impress the viewer enough to make a purchase.
