The family of Johnstone Wheelers cyclist Iain McTavish have paid a heartfelt tribute after he tragically lost his life in a road traffic collision on the A8 near Port Glasgow.
The 46-year-old was taking part in a training ride with fellow cyclists on the evening of Tuesday, 8 September, when a collision involving three bicycles and a blue Ford C-Max occurred on the westbound carriageway between the Langbank and Woodhead roundabouts. Emergency services attended, but Iain sadly died at the scene.
In a statement released through Police Scotland, his family described him as a well-respected member of the community who was passionate about cycling. They said he studied at the University of Glasgow, earning both an MA (Hons) and a Master's degree in Philosophy, and was known for competing in cycling events across Scotland.
Johnstone Wheelers Cycling Club also paid tribute, remembering Iain as one of the sport's genuinely good people. The club said members were devastated by the loss of a valued friend and teammate, recalling that he had been riding with the group when the incident happened.
Tributes have continued to arrive from across Scotland's cycling community. Scottish Cycling described Iain as a committed and dependable rider who played an active role within the local cycling scene, regularly supporting events and fellow competitors.
Two other cyclists, aged 37 and 27, were taken to hospital following the collision. The 33-year-old driver of the Ford C-Max also attended hospital and has since been discharged.
Police Scotland's investigation into the circumstances of the collision is continuing. Officers are asking anyone who witnessed the incident, or anyone with dash-cam footage from the A8 between Langbank and Woodhead around 7.10pm on Tuesday evening, to come forward.
