Erskine Library will close for a short period while it moves from Bridgewater Shopping Centre to a temporary building at Erskine Sports Centre.
Renfrewshire Council’s Leadership Board agreed the temporary suspension of library services on Wednesday 16 September 2026.
Council officers will work with OneRen to keep the closure as short as possible.
The temporary library is expected to open in October 2026, subject to the remaining work being completed.
The existing lease at Bridgewater Shopping Centre was due to expire in May 2026. The landlord would not agree to a longer extension.
A short-term extension was secured to prevent a gap in library services before the temporary facility was ready.
A contract with Portakabin for the temporary modular buildings was approved in November 2025. Procurement and legal issues delayed the formal appointment of the contractor.
Groundworks at Erskine Sports Centre began in August 2026. The council report said the temporary building was due to be installed in mid-September.
The temporary library will provide a short-to-medium-term solution while the wider OneRen review of leisure and culture services continues.
The community will be consulted about the planned opening date. Local ward councillors will also receive updates on the move.
