★★★½ (5/5)

Paisley's got itself another pizza spot, and this one's worth keeping an eye on. Doominico only opened its doors on Well Street this year — you'll spot the wee red-and-green sign tucked between End Beauty and Caz's Deli — and for a place that's still finding its feet, it's already turning out food that punches above a first-year opening.

The pizza is the star. It's proper stone-baked, with a puffed, blistered crust and that lovely leopard-spotting round the edge that tells you the oven's hot and somebody knows what they're doing. We had the veggie — red onion, mushrooms and chunks of green and yellow pepper over a bright tomato base — and the whole thing arrived on a wooden board looking the part. The base has a good chew to it and the char gives it real flavour. If I'm being picky, and a 3.5 means I have to be, it could've done with a touch more cheese and a bit more seasoning to lift the veg. Good, not knockout — but good.

Doominico Pizzeria, 9 Well Street, Paisley — a promising new arrival

The Meat & Grill box is where you get your money's worth. A proper pile of chargrilled chicken shawarma, seasoned fries, cheesy garlic bread and a fresh little salad of red cabbage, cucumber and tomato all crammed in. The chicken's got a nice smoky edge and there's no skimping on the portion — you'll not leave hungry. The salad being fresh and crunchy is a small thing that a lot of takeaways get lazy about, so credit where it's due.

So why not higher? It's early days, the menu's still bedding in, and there's a surcharge added to orders that's worth knowing about before you order. Nothing here is a dealbreaker — it's the difference between "really solid new takeaway" and "the best in town," and Doominico isn't quite the latter yet. But the fundamentals are all in the right place, and that's the hard part to teach.

The verdict: A genuinely good new addition to the Paisley food scene. The stone-baked pizzas and the generous grill boxes are the picks. Give it six months to settle and this could easily be a four. For now, it's a confident, tasty 3.5 — and well worth a try.
