This time we've looked at the practical side: how to sign up as a new patient, what the first appointment involves, what the practice offers nervous patients, and how its emergency appointments work.

Registering as a new patient

According to the practice's How to Register page, you can register online, by phone on 0141 737 5488, or over WhatsApp. The steps it sets out are:

  • Get in touch: book a check-up or a chat about a particular treatment, online or via WhatsApp.
  • Initial call: the team calls you back to ask about your dental health, any concerns and what you'd like to achieve, so your first appointment is planned around you.
  • First visit: a full check-up with Dr Dee, the lead dentist and practice owner.
  • Treatment plan by email: afterwards you're sent a written plan to read through at home, and the team can answer questions about it.

The same page says the practice aims to see patients within two weeks of booking, and lists a private check-up for new patients from £67. Check the current price with the practice when you book.

What happens at the first appointment

The practice's First Visit page says the check-up may include x-rays and a digital scan of your teeth and gums, so the dentist can see their current condition. If you go on to have further treatment, that scan is used to plan it. The page also mentions a few small touches: when the team calls ahead they ask what you'd like to drink when you arrive, and new patients are given a "DD Goodie Bag" with a brochure about the treatments on offer.

Help for nervous patients

Dee Dental has a dental anxiety page describing what it offers patients who find the dentist stressful. The measures it lists include:

  • coming in early to look around and meet the team before any treatment starts, or an online video call if you can't visit in person first
  • an anxiety scale used to adjust how each appointment is run
  • early appointment slots, so there's less time to worry beforehand
  • TV, Netflix or music with noise-cancelling headphones during treatment, and blankets
  • agreeing a signal, such as raising a hand, to pause treatment
  • talking through alternatives such as numbing gels, oral sedatives or a referral for IV sedation

If you're anxious about going to the dentist, the practice suggests mentioning it when you first get in touch.

Emergency appointments

The emergency care page says the practice offers same-day emergency appointments for problems such as broken or cracked teeth, severe toothache, abscesses, trouble with crowns and bridges, injuries, and bleeding or swelling. The page says you don't need to be a registered patient to book one.

The emergency appointment is listed at a fixed £99, covering an examination, x-rays and immediate pain relief. Any further treatment is charged separately, and the page says costs are explained before any work goes ahead. Emergency appointments are only available during opening hours. Outside those hours, in the evenings and at weekends, the practice tells patients to call NHS 24 on 111.

Opening hours

The hours published on the practice website are Monday 9.00am to 7.30pm and Tuesday to Friday 9.00am to 5.45pm, closed Saturday and Sunday. Hours can change, so confirm on deedentalpaisley.co.uk or by phone before you visit.
