600 Renfrewshire school kids competed in a road race in Linwood last week.

The race, which was the first of three taking place over the school year, saw 400 primary six and seven pupils run the 1.5k race whilst 200 first to third year secondary pupils ran the 3k race.

All three races are held in partnership with Renfrewshire Council’s Active Schools programme and Kilbarchan Amateur Athletic Club and will see runners take part in a cross country run in February and track and field championships in the summer.

Councillor Susan McDonald, Renfrewshire Council’s Sports Champion, said: “It’s great that so many local youngsters competed in these races and are continuing to get involved in the Renfrewshire Active Schools programme.”

“The sporting events held throughout the year are also part of Renfrewshire’s Gateway to the Games programme which will help find and recognise top young athletes in the run up to the 2012 London Olympics and the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.”

“Getting children involved in sport from an early age is a major investment in their future. The benefits of having an active lifestyle, with regular exercise are well known.”

A total of 25 primary schools and 11 secondary schools from Renfrewshire took part in the first race. A full list of winners can be found at www.renfrewshire.gov.uk.
