THE Clan ice hockey club has raised thousands of pounds for a charity that supports the LGBT+ community.

The money was raised at a recent Clan Elite Ice Hockey League home game at Braehead Arena that the club had designated as a Pride Night.

Their players wore specially designed jerseys during the game against Nottingham Panthers to show support for the LGBTQ+ movement.

After the game, the limited edition tops were auctioned off to fans raising £8860 for the TIE – Time for Inclusive Education – charity.

TIE is an LGBTQ+ charity that tackles homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying and prejudice in schools through education.

And representatives of the charity paid a visit to Braehead Arena, which is the Clan’s home ice, to receive a giant cheque for the money raised.

Co-founders of TIE, Jordan Daly and Liam Stevenson said: “We are hugely grateful to the Glasgow Clan staff, players and fans – the Purple Army – for their generosity in raising such a large amount of money.

“This donation will help us to develop more resources for teachers, ensuring that LGBT young people and those with LGBT family members, see themselves and their lives reflected in their learning.

“Prejudice related to being LGBT is still common in schools across Scotland, and this support from Glasgow Clan helps us to address this to ensure that all young people can be confident in who they are and free from prejudice while at school.”

Gareth Chalmers, Braehead Arena managing director said: “Ice hockey is a sport open to all and our fans, once again, have been very generous when it comes to raising money for a good cause.

“We’ve been supporters of the LGBT+ community for some time and raising money for a charity like TIE is a practical way of showing our support.”
