Please note the M8 will be subject to lane restrictions and road closures from 6am on Saturday, 30 October and not 8pm as previously issued.
Drivers are being reminded that there are additional road closures and restrictions, coming into force near the SEC, for a short period, due to specific COP26 events on 1 November.
On Monday 1 November, part of Dumbarton Road and Argyle Street will be closed to traffic and no vehicles permitted to be parked on the route. This is likely to cause severe congestion in the area as it is currently one of the alternative routes that people have been using because of the Clydeside Expressway being closed.
Dumbarton Road and Argyle Street from Byres Road to St. Vincent Street will be closed from 1000hrs Monday 1 November to 0600hrs Tuesday 2 November.
Finnieston Street from Argyle Street to Lancefield Quay will also be closed as will a number of other roads in the area that join Argyle Street.
No Parking will be permitted on Argyle Street, Dumbarton Road, Finnieston Street and short lengths of the adjoining roads from 0800hrs on Monday. Vehicles left on the route after this time will be removed.
The above restrictions will not impact emergency service vehicles responding to an emergency within the area and pedestrian access will be maintained.
COP26 begins on Sunday 31 October with world leaders attending a special summit at the start of the proceedings.
People are urged to plan their journeys in advance. Drivers in particular are being asked to look at travelling outside peak times, consider if the journey is necessary at that time or at all and leaving the car, opting to travel in a different way to reduce congestion.
Some 9,000 letters have also been sent to homes in the Anderston, Finnieston and Yorkhill areas with full details and maps of the road closures and parking restrictions.
Andy Waddell, Director of City Operations at Glasgow City Council, said: “In general people have heeded the advice to plan ahead when travelling in and around the city. Diversion routes are busier due to the Clydeside Expressway being closed but people have taken on board what we’ve been saying about changing how and when they travel to avoid congested areas. This will be particularly important with the additional road closures coming into effect on Monday.
“Ultimately we need people to plan ahead, allow extra time for their journey or make alternative arrangements if possible.”
Road closures are already in place for public safety with Glasgow’s Clydeside Expressway now fully closed until 15 November.
The M8 will be subject to lane restrictions and road closures from 6am on Saturday, 30 October until 6am on November 15. The Tradeston M8 On-slip at West Street will be closed with no access to North Street/Charing Cross.
A signed diversion route will be in place from West Street to North Street, via Kingston Street, George V Bridge and the Broomielaw. Access to Bothwell Street from the M8 Eastbound at Junction 18 will remain open.
