Pupils from Kersland School will join Renfrewshire’s Provost Celia Lawson and serving soldiers from the 1st Battalion Scots Guards, for the official raising of the Armed Forces Day flag 2010.

Lance Sergeant Jamie Robertson, 1st Battalion Scots Guard, Regimental Support Team, will raise the official Armed Forces Day flag in the ceremony taking place outside Renfrewshire House, Cotton Street, Paisley on Monday 21 June.

Lance Sergeant Robertson will be joined by pupils from Kersland School who will unveil a special Armed Forces Day flower display and 14-year-old pupil Lyndsay Hunter, from Paisley, will read a poem called ‘I Miss You’.

A short service will be lead by Reverrend Alan Birss from Paisley Abbey. The Armed Forces Day flag will fly for seven days.

The flag-raising ceremony takes place ahead of Renfrewshire’s joint service with Inverclyde and East Renfrewshire councils being held in Paisley Abbey on Armed Forces Day (Saturday 26th June).

Renfrewshire’s Provost Celia Lawson said: “The flag-raising ceremony is the first stage in Renfrewshire’s celebrations for Armed Forces Day 2010. I am delighted that pupils from Kersland School will be involved in the ceremony along with Lance Sergeant Robertson. Renfrewshire has a proud military history and this is a chance for all generations to honour servicemen and women of the past and present.”

Armed Forces Day in Renfrewshire will this year include a parade led by the Royal British Legion who will be joined by different serving regiments and volunteers. The parade will set off from the Royal British Legion, Renfrew Road, Paisley, at 9.30am marching to Paisley Abbey.

The Armed Forces Day service starts at 10am in Paisley Abbey. The service is open to the public
