Dobbies Garden Centres has announced its support for 53 local charities and community groups across the UK through its Dobbies Community Gardens initiative, seeing the Glasgow store award West Primary School.
This year, the programme received hundreds of applications from deserving causes, with each of Dobbies’ 53 stores selecting a local garden project to support from the nominations received.
One of the projects is West Primary School in Paisley, selected by the Glasgow store, which is currently developing a small garden area for the school children to take part in outdoor and sensory learning activities. The children benefit greatly from hands-on experiences such as planting, watering and caring for plants as it helps to develop confidence, communication and is good for their wellbeing.
With Dobbies’ support, West Primary School will be able to develop their plans, giving children a place to enjoy and learn.
Dobbies’ General Manager for the Glasgow store, Charles Randall, said: “Thank you to everyone who applied to Dobbies Community Gardens this year. We received a fantastic selection of entries from inspiring groups across Glasgow, all with a shared passion for bringing their garden projects to life.
“Selecting the successful project has been incredibly difficult, but we’re delighted to be supporting West Primary this year. Through this initiative, we’re helping communities to get growing while creating and enhancing green spaces for local people to enjoy. We’re looking forward to seeing how West Primary develop and the positive difference they will make.”
Michelle Currie from West Primary School said: "Thank you to Dobbies for supporting our school. We are currently developing a small gardening area that will allow our children to take part in sensory and outdoor learning activities. Many of our pupils benefit greatly from hands-on experiences such as planting, watering, and caring for plants, which helps develop confidence, communication, and wellbeing. These resources would make a meaningful difference and allow our pupils to engage with nature, learn new skills, and take pride in growing plants themselves."
Through the initiative, Dobbies’ teams’ will help bring the local project to life by providing volunteer hours and product donations, including plants, compost, grow-your-own items and essential gardening tools.
The successful groups include a wide range of organisations such as schools, nurseries, care homes and community gardens, all working to create or enhance green spaces within their communities.
